NIE appointment in Spain: how it works

By Inés Arroyo VidalReviewed by Marta Calderón IbáñezPublished Updated Stage 4: Check and contract

Quick answer

In Spain you first request an immigration appointment online and then file in person, or through a representative. Slots can be scarce, so check offices outside your city, ask a lawyer to file with a power of attorney, or apply through a consulate if you live abroad. Use only official channels.

Applies toBuyers who cannot get a slot or who are not sure how the system works. It does not cover appointments for residence cards.

§ 1Why there is an appointment

In Spain, the application for a NIE is made in person, and the foreigners’ office page says that before filing you request an immigration appointment through the government’s online system. The appointment exists to control the flow of people at the counter. For the buyer it is often the slowest part of the process, since the decision itself must be made within five days of registration. The full explanation is in more on the NIE.

§ 2How the system works

The online system lists the offices and police stations that take NIE requests, and the days on which they have free slots. You choose the province, the office and the type of procedure, and you receive a confirmation to print or save. Slots are released at times the offices decide, so scarcity is common in busy provinces. If you have a digital certificate, you may be able to file electronically, which avoids the counter, and a representative with a certificate can do it for you.

§ 3What to do when there are no slots

First, widen the search: try other offices in the same province and in neighbouring provinces, and try at different hours. Second, consider a representative. A lawyer or gestor in Spain can file on your behalf if you give them a power of attorney that expressly authorises the request, and they often have access to channels that individuals do not. Third, if you live abroad, apply through the Spanish consulate for your country of residence, using the consulate’s own appointment system. The steps of the application are in how to get a NIE explained.

§ 4Beware of paid slots

The booking is free. The only official fee is the one for the application, paid on form 790 code 012, and it was €9.84 when we checked. Pages that sell appointments are intermediaries, and some are fraudulent. Never give your passport details to a site you cannot verify, and never pay a fee to someone who says that they have “reserved” a slot for you unless it is a professional you have hired.

§ 5What to bring

Take the completed form in two copies, the proof that you paid the fee, your passport or identity document and a copy, the statement of your reasons, and the appointment confirmation. If a representative attends, they also bring the power of attorney and their own identity document.

§ 6If the appointment is far away

If the first slot is weeks away, ask your lawyer whether the contract can be adjusted. The reservation should not depend on a date that an office controls. The specific points about timing for a buyer are in a NIE for buying property explained.

§ 7After the filing

Keep the receipt that the office gives you. If you do not hear back within the deadline, ask your representative to follow up. When you have the number, remember that it is not a residence permission, and read how the difference between NIE and TIE works for the difference.

FAQRelated questions

What do I do when no appointments are free?

Look at neighbouring offices and different hours first. A Spanish lawyer or gestor holding your power of attorney may be able to lodge the request for you, and anyone living overseas can go through the consulate nearest home.

Is it safe to pay for an appointment?

Take care. Booking costs nothing, and the sole official charge is the application fee. Sites selling slots are middlemen and some are frauds, so stick to the government system or an adviser you picked yourself.

Do I need to attend personally?

Not always. A representative with a proper power of attorney can file, and consulates handle requests from abroad. If you attend in Spain, take the form, the proof of payment, your passport and a copy.
